During the Tang Dynasty, the earth suffered under 10 blazing suns. A skilled archer, Hou Yi, shot down 9 suns with his legendary bow, saving the people. As a reward, the Moon Gods gave him 2 elixirs of immortality. Unfortunately, Yi grew arrogant. His wife Cheng'e feared that he would abuse the elixirs, therefore consuming them herself as a sacrifice and floating towards the moon.
There are different versions to this myth, but one thing remains the same – on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month, when the moon is at its fullest, families gather to celebrate unity, often with a mooncake in hand.
